Abstract:
Housing Development Finance Corporation (HDFC) is India's
premier housing finance company and one of the most successful and admired
financial institutions in the country. Started in 1977, it has grown in size and
stature over the years. It has demonstrated that a business venture that meets
an important social need, can also be extremely profitable. HDFC has done well
in a business that no other business group in the country has thought of
venturing into. In recent times, HDFC has diversified into a number of related
areas such as banking and insurance and carved out a strong position in these
businesses. The case narrates the origin and growth of HDFC as a successful
organisation and the role played by visionary leadership in its success.
